More than a decade after our first visit to Zombieland, director Ruben Fleischer has revealed that production on the sequel is gearing up for a January 2019 start. Earlier this year, Fleischer announced that Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin would all be reprising their roles. No word yet on Bill Murray.

“We’re already actually starting Zombieland. I’ve been scouting and storyboarding and getting it going, and to get to work with that cast again is just an absolute dream come true. It’s been really exciting starting to think about that movie, and to get to work with Emma, Jesse, Woody and Abigail once again is truly a dream come true. Yeah, we’re just at the very early stages, but we have an amazing script, and we’re going to start shooting in Georgia in January.”

Fleischer's currently doing the press tour for Venom, and it sounds as though he'll be going straight into pre-production on Zombieland 2 once he's done. Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool) are once again penning the script which will reportedly see the gang travel from “the White House to the American heartland as they face off against new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors.”

There was no Walking Dead on our screens when Zombieland arrived back in 2008, no World War Z, and Shaun of the Dead was a mere four years old. The zombie genre remains as popular as ever, but it has been a good long while since we've had a good zombie themed comedy. The closest we've come in recent years is the sorely underrated Cooties, which technically speaking isn't even a zombie movie. I'm a big fan of Zombieland, not so much the TV series reboot that didn't get further than an Amazon pilot, and I'm all in on the sequel.

Venom is released in cinemas on October 3.
