Willem Dafoe to play Ryuk in DeathNote Film
It is confirmed that Willem Dafoe will play the part of the Ryuk demon in the Netflix live action production of Death Note. But, before you get excited about seeing Defoe in all his villainous goodness it has also been confirmed that the Ryuk will be created with CGI. I do think that this is a missed opportunity as Defoe just has the face for the part. Is that mean of me to say but it is undeniable that he has the look of a demon. The Netflix original will follow the plot of the anime, and there are some interesting members both on the screen and behind it.
Directing the movie will be Adam Wingard ( Blair Witch Sequel and The Guest) and with a horror director taking the reigns we can only hope that it will be as creepy as the anime has been. Other stars tied to the project are Nat Wolff (The Fault in our Stars) and Keith Stanfield ( Straight Outta Compton). The film is set for release in 2017, and I do think that fans of the 2003 manga would love a film that captured the imaginations of millions of fans. I do believe that it is interesting that there are no Asian actors in lead roles yet, a problem Hollywood has been criticised of lately.Do you think that a live action anime film should have Asian actors for it to be true to itself? Big questions my friends. For those of you, that don't know what DeathNote is really about. Here I am being lazy and posting just a brief synopsis courtesy of Wikipedia:
A young man comes to possess a supernatural notebook, the Death Note, that grants him the power to kill any person simply by writing down their name on the pages. He decides to use the notebook to kill criminals and change the world. An enigmatic detective attempts to track him down and end his reign of terror
So, while I am upset about Defoe not showing his face in a film that it would work so well in I do think that this could be an entertaining film.
