Venom Director Says There Is No Unrated Cut
If you were hoping for an uncut version of Venom to arrive on Home Entertainment, I'm afraid I have some bad news. Well, to be more specific the film's director has some bad news for you as Ruben Fleischer confirms that the version released in cinemas is the only version we'll see.
“I’m proud of the movie we’ve put out, and I think that the additional material on the DVD adds a little bit of colour to the film. I don’t feel the need at this point to release an unrated version, I feel like fans seem to really like the movie that we put out.”
I can't call myself an enthusiastic fan of the movie that made it into cinemas. Sure, there was some fun to be had, and far be it from me to disagree with the filmmaker, but if there were an uncut version, I would be adding it to my collection. Previously lacklustre films such as Expendables 3, Die Hard 4.0, and The Wolfman were all drastically improved by an extended bloodier cut.
In the US, Venom was rated PG-13, however, us more overly reserved Brits deemed it suitable for audiences aged 15 and up. The certificate told us to expect something darker than the usual Marvel release, but the watered-down violence didn't live up to the certificate. Regardless of critical opinion, Venom was an undeniable box office blockbuster with a global haul of more than $850 million. I doubt Sony will be changing their minds about the PG-13 future of the franchise, but hopefully, the sequel will be a more coherent offering.
Venom is released on DVD & Blu-ray on February 4, 2019.
