Despite being set up as a one-off limited series, a second run of The Sinner has been confirmed and an official synopsis has been released.

The first season starred Jessica Biel as Cora Tannetti, a seemingly ordinary (albeit bored) housewife who shockingly murders a man on the beach during a family picnic. Less of a whodunit, and more of a whydunit, The Sinner was unexpectedly a ratings smash and got the world talking when it was released on Netflix. Biel eluded to a second season being a possibility last year , and at the time I suggested that Bill Pullman's troubled Detective Ambrose was the obvious way forward, and that's exactly what's happening. Permission to engage smug mode.

"In the wake of the Cora Tannetti case, Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) is called back to his hometown in distant rural New York to assess a disturbing new crime: an 11-year-old boy's horrific double-homicide & his seemingly inexplicable motive. As Ambrose comes to realise there's nothing ordinary about the boy or where he came from, his investigation leads him straight into the hidden darkness of his hometown and pitting him against those who'll stop at nothing to protect its secrets."

Jessica Biel will remain involved as a producer, but it appears as though she won't be reprising her role as Cora and the second season will consist of mostly new characters. Considering that Cora's story had reached a conclusion, it's a good move not to unpick a satisfying end for her character. We don't need another Broadchurch, True Detective or The Killing that had electric first seasons but couldn't recapture the magic in their subsequent instalments.

The Sinner will return to The USA Network (and Netflix for the rest of the world) later this year.
