ABC has decided not to move forward with The Middle's spin-off Sue Sue In The City. Eden Sher was all set to reprise her role as Sue Heck and the now axed series would have followed her adventures as she leaves Orson behind for a job in Chicago.

Talk of a spin-off emerged earlier this year when The Middle's ninth and final season was winding down. ABC ordered a pilot back in August from The Middle creators Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline. The pilot was shot in October which many had assumed would lead to a swift series pick-up.

The Middle might not have been a Modern Family sized hit, but for nine seasons it was easily one of the most underrated sitcoms in recent memory. Throughout its 214 episode lifespan, The Middle was nominated for just one PrimeTime Emmy Award, for Outstanding Makeup for a Single-Camera Series (Non-Prosthetic). I'm not saying that the season three episode nine installment titled The Play didn't have outstanding makeup, but The Middle deserved more recognition than it got.

According to Deadline, this might not be the end as Sue Sue In The City will be shopped around to other networks. ABC previously passed up the Black-ish spin-off Grown-ish which went on to find success on Freeform. So, we may yet see more of Sue Heck and get some answers from that series finale flashforward.

Meanwhile, ABC does have one spin-off from a hit sitcom launching in its 2018-2019 schedule. The long-gestating 90s set offshoot of The Goldbergs is finally happening after a multitude of false starts. Created by Marc Firek & Adam F. Goldberg, Schooled stars Goldbergs regulars Coach Mellor (Bryan Callen), Principal Glascott (Tim Meadows), and Lainey Lewis (AJ Michalka). Following the pilot episode being retooled as a special one-off titled The Goldbergs: 1990-Something, ABC had a change of heart and ordered Schooled straight to series. There are currently no fixed details on when the series will be broadcast, but Schooled will start its 13 episode run early in the new year.
