Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith and Jeremy Dyson will reunite as The League of Gentlemen for three special episodes to celebrate twenty years since the formation of the comedy troupe.

A reunion for the League of Gentlemen has frequently been talked about, and last year the onscreen trio (Gatiss, Pemberton, and Shearsmith) confirmed their hopes to do something for their 20th anniversary. While it remains unclear when The League will return and if it will be to Royston Vasey, but the three episodes will be broadcast later this year.

The League of Gentlemen started life at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1995 and went on to spawn a hit BBC radio series two years later. The TV series launched in 1999 and its darkly tinged characters and quotable dialogue quickly garnered The League a cult following. Three acclaimed runs of the show and a hit movie version later, The League as a quartet parted ways to work on new things, but a reunion was always intended.

Shearsmith and Pemberton continued their creative partnership to write and star in the sorely missed Psychoville, and series four of their award-winning anthology Inside No.9 is set to air early next year. Post-League, Jeremy Dyson created the underrated crime thriller Funland (featuring Mark Gatiss) and is currently working on a movie version of his stage show Ghost Stories.

Mark Gatiss went on to feature in (and write) numerous episodes of Doctor Who, Game of Thrones and co-created a little show called Sherlock that launched a global obsession with Benedict Cumberbatch. Gatiss also reunited with Shearsmith and Pemberton for an extraordinary episode of Psychoville that was shot in two takes as a homage to Alfred Hitchcock's Rope.

It has been fifteen years since The League of Gentlemen brought the series to a close, the world has changed dramatically in that time, and I can't wait to see how the residents of Royston Vasey are getting on.
