The prospects of a fourth Expendables movie seemed in doubt last year when franchise patriarch Sylvester Stallone had reportedly quit due to a creative clash with Nu Image/Millennium boss Avi Lerner. Since Stallone's apparent exit, there hasn't been much in the way of developments, until now.

Taking to Instagram, Stallone uploaded an image from the first Expendables.

Released back in 2010, The Expendables united some of the greatest action movie legends in a supremely silly and hugely violent throwback to the 80s. Grossing more than $274 million worldwide, The Expendables proved aged was just a number with Stallone and the gang running rings around their younger counterparts. The sequel arrived two years later, and despite a lower box office haul domestically, The Expendables 2 clocked in at more than $314 million globally.

However, all good things must come to an end, and the release of Expendables 3 did away with the excessive violence and opted for a PG-13 (12) rating. While the PG-13 rating offers a big broad potential audience, the decision to tone the franchise down and add new younger cast members alienated the very audience that had made the film series a hit. Ranking as the lowest grossing in the franchise, Expendables 3 generated $214 million by the time it finished its run. In its defence, an illegal copy of the film found its way to torrent sites three weeks before release which undoubtedly had an impact on its overall numbers

We've heard all sorts of rumours over the last few years about the future of The Expendables franchise beyond the movies. A TV series spin-off that would unite small screen action legends has been trapped in development hell, and the all-female spin-off ExpendaBelles has yet to materialise. There are no details on when Expendables 4 will be released, but we'll be sure to let you know as soon as we hear something.
