Studio Ghibli returns with When Marnie Was There
The animation powerhouse that exposed the western world to eastern values and unforgettable story telling.
In UK cinemas on June 10th, screening in both Japanese and English, the English versions's star-studded cast includes Kiernan Shipka, Hailee Steinfeld, Kathy Bates, Ellen Burstyn, Catherine O'Hara and John C. Reilly.
A touching tale of love, loneliness, and friendship, When Marnie Was There is the story of an emotionally distant adolescent girl, who upon being sent to live with relatives in the countryside becomes obsessed with an abandoned mansion, and infatuated with a girl who lives there; a girl who may or may not be real. The film has been described as "Ghibli Gothic," with its moonlit seascapes, glowing orchestral score, and powerful dramatic portrayals that build to a stormy climax.
The film will be released as part of the Studio Ghibli Forever season, a complete retrospective of the animation house's work, which includes Only Yesterday, a first-ever English language dub of the 1991 film, that has been produced to celebrate the 25th Anniversary, featuring the voices of Daisy Ridley (Star Wars) and Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire). Studio Ghibli Forever will run from April 29th until July 22nd.
