Shaft Reboot Is Now A Sequel With Samuel L. Jackson
New Line's fresh spin on classic blaxploitation movie Shaft will no longer be a full-on reboot. Instead, the new film will be a legacy sequel with Samuel L. Jackson back on the beat as John Shaft II.
Titled Son of Shaft, Jessie T. Usher (Independence Day: Resurgence) will star as the estranged son of Jackson's John Shaft II who followed in his father's footsteps and went into law enforcement. Well, he became an FBI agent, and according to Variety, the father and son will make an unlikely duo when they're forced to work together on a case.
Released back in 2000 and directed by John Singleton, Shaft kept things in the family as Samuel L. Jackson starred as the nephew of the original character as played by the legendary Richard Roundtree. To give the new Shaft some added class, Roundtree made a cameo, and he shared a couple of nice scenes with Jackson, and he's set to do the same in Son of Shaft as well. So that's three generations of Shaft in one movie.
As movie audiences continue to become more discerning about reboots in general, Hollywood is starting to adapt with more passing the torch sequels that serve as a soft reboot. Creed, The Force Awakens and hopefully Blade Runner 2049 all brought back original cast members while introducing a new crop of characters to carry the franchise on.
Black-ish creator Kenya Barrisis writing the script with Ride Along director Tim Story at the helm. There are currently no details on when Son of Shaft will arrive in cinemas, but filming could start as early as this year
