Never one to rest on his laurels, Sir Ridley Scott has revealed that he already has a script for a sequel to Alien Covenant, and production could start as soon as next year. Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Scott confirmed that he'd be ready should 20th Century Fox want a sequel.

“You’ve got to assume to a certain extent success and from that you’d better be ready. You don’t want a two-year gap. So I’ll be ready to go again next year.”

Like most fans of Alien, I was ridiculously excited for the release of Prometheus, Scott warned us that the prequel would only contain slight "DNA" of the beloved 1979 classic. Naturally, I ignored this and got caught up in the idea of an Alien prequel, and when no Xenomorphs appeared (aside from a cameo at the end), I felt somehow cheated.

Visually, Prometheus is a bold and beautiful slice of science fiction and serves as the building blocks for what's to come. I fully admire Prometheus for exploring the mythology of The Space Jockey (Engineers), it just didn't feel tonally connected to the Alien universe.

That's not the case with Covenant, the trailers and short prolog that have been released has brought the fear back along with the iconic chestbursters and Xenomorphs. The most recent trailer offered up a glimpse of the new (or old as it's a prequel) Neomorphs, these little beauties burst out of its carrier's back, and unlike the Xenomorphs the Neomorphs have a translucent appearance.
Should Alien Covenant be fortunate enough to get a sequel, it sounds as though Scott is planning to release the proposed movie in 2019, the 40th anniversary of Scott's original Alien. Starring Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Noomi Repace and James Franco, Alien Covenant is released on May 19.
