To prepare for 2017's Paddington 2the film was watched and reviewed. Paddington is a live-action/CGI animated comedy film written and directed by Paul King based on the stories of the character of the same name created by Michael Bond. The film stars the voice of Ben Whishaw along with Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, and Nicole Kidman in live-action roles.

The film is about Paddington Bear (Whishaw) traveling to London after a tragedy strikes his family's home in Peru. There he meets the Brown family. Mrs. Brown (Hawkins) persuades her uptight husband (Bonneville) to take him in while he looks for the British explorer who met his family years ago and blindly invited them to live with him.

This film could have been another terrible attempt to bring a children's book character to the big screen. However, this film is a nice surprise. The director, Paul King, is able to create a very charming and sweet family film that is full of moments that will please both young children and the parents that have to put on a children's film. It has a lot of witty puns that work well and the CGI is just as good. While this being a children's film and the danger is clearly not that bad for adults, it still can be frightening for any children. If you enjoy slapstick humor and puns, there are a lot such as "toilet humor" while Paddington is in the bathroom.

The Characters:

As mentioned, the CGI of Paddington looks great and he fits into each scene flawlessly. Whishaw is able to add this innocence to this fish out of water story. His clumsy antics seem authentic as he adjusts to the human lifestyle. The supporting human characters are fairly standard but enjoyable nonetheless. Each actor is a lot of fun to see and it's obvious they are having fun in their roles.  There's not much to them that jumps off the screen and screams significance but that's not a bad thing for a children's film.  They all are fun caricatures of real humans.

The Flaws:

The only real flaw is its story as there's not much there aside from a cute children's story. The film can be pretty figured out early on. In addition, the threat of Millicent Clyde (Kidman) is there but there's not much to her. She wants to succeed where her father failed to become rich and famous herself.  Kidman is having fun but that's it. For a film focused towards kids, this is fine but it's no Pixar.

Overall:

It is a fun film that is filled with humor for both children and adults. Its honestly harmless and will please most viewers. However, the story is somewhat episodic which could take away from rewatching it for some. Does this flaw make this film terrible? No, absolutely not and if it has not been watched, it's definitely worth a watch at least once. Hopefully, the sequel will fix the story aspect and it will be better.
