The power of fans relentlessly campaigning to save Sense8 from cancellation has paid off, just not in the way all fans of the show had been hoping. While it might not be the full third season they wanted, the Sense8 fans have managed to get Netflix to order a one-off episode to wrap the series up with a two-hour finale.

Sense8 co-creator Lana Wachowski issued a lengthy statement online and thanked the loyal fanbase for their support in bringing the show back from the dead.

"The passionate letters, the petitions, the collective voice that rose up like the fist of Sun to fight for this show was beyond what anyone was expecting.

It is my great pleasure as well as Netflix?s (believe me, they love the show as much as we do but the numbers have always been challenging) to announce that there will be another two-hour special released next year. After that?if this experience has taught me anything, you NEVER know."

As soon as news broke that Sense8 had been axed, fans mobilised online under #SaveSense8 to show Netflix that there was a fiercely loyal following for the series. Fans were left frustrated by the sudden cancellation as it left the show on a massive cliffhanger with no hope of resolution. A cancellation reversal doesn't happen often, so Lana Wachowski's cautious optimism for the future of Sense8 beyond the special is perfectly valid. Ironically, since Sense8 was cancelled, it has inadvertently raised its profile and has garnered a wealth of new fans.

The Sense8 Special will be available on Netflix sometime next year, and we'll keep you posted with all the latest developments
