NBC Cancels Timeless Again
Last year, Timeless managed a rare feat by being canceled by NBC only for the network to change their minds following a fan campaign to save the show. NBC picked up the sci-fi drama for a shortened ten-episode second season which recently concluded with a whopper of a cliffhanger.
Sadly, the viewership didn't improve over the course of the second run, and consequently, NBC has axed the show for the second time. However, Deadline reports that talks are ongoing for a two-hour TV movie to wrap the show up so fans that championed the series won't be left eternally frustrated.
Co-creator Shawn Ryan took to Twitter to let the fans know the bad news;
"This is a sad day for the writers, actors, crew and especially the viewers of Timeless. We are all extremely proud of what we made and know that it was more than just a show for so many of our fans. It became a passion and a cause for many of them. We’re proud of the impact @NBCTImeless had on so many people – the students who embraced history as a result of our show, the people who were inspired by our stories of inclusion and acceptance. We saw your tweets and were inspired by you.
If NBC is sincere in wanting a 2-hour movie to give much-needed closure to our amazing @NBCTimeless fans, we are ready to make it. We don’t want the journeys of Lucy, Wyatt, Rufus and the others to end yet.”
Considering Timeless defied the odds before and was saved from cancellation, there is a chance that another network or streaming service could swoop in. At the time of writing, the show isn't being shopped around to potential suitors, but that could well change overnight. Timeless joins a growing list of TV shows that have been axed this year despite a vocal and loyal fanbase.
Just last month Freeform surprisingly canceled Shadowhunters with the forthcoming second half of season three serving as the series finale. Like Timeless (possibly), Shadowhunters will sign off with a two-hour special to wrap things up. Fans of the show have voiced their upset that the final two books are going to be condensed into two hours. The campaign to save Shadowhunters continues with recent efforts including fans hiring a plane to fly over Netflix's HQ with the SaveShadowhunters banner.
