John Wick Spin-Off Series Lands At Starz
The John Wick TV spin-off is officially moving forward as Starz has picked up the sought-after action series. The Continental will explore the various goings on at the hitman safe haven as seen in both John Wick movies. Speaking to Slash Film, Carmi Zlotnick, President of Original Programming for Starz, confirmed that the series would centre on a new protagonist but remains connected to the world of John Wick.
“They’ve got a really good structure. It’s very tied to the film [in that] it’s about the Continentals all over the world, how certain people come into that world, and what happens in relation to those people, which is cool. I think the world is very vast, and everything I’ve heard from it is very positive. […] It’s something that studio seems very, very intent on [making] and very, very behind… You can be with the consigliere, concierge, the sommelier — you can be with all these different characters and walk through the world in different aspects; ones that I’m a little limited [from exploring] by staying with my lead guy.”
Zlotnick also added that we could expect to see Reeves drop in for a cameo as the enigmatic John Wick, and there are currently conversations taking place for Ian McShane's Winston, the owner and manager of the New York branch of The Continental.
“There are certainly conversations about having Ian McShane back. The good part is we have some sort of insight into his schedule because of our involvement in American Gods. We’re in conversations with Ian.”
Starz' American Gods is still without a showrunner since Bryan Fuller and Michael Green departed, and Gillian Anderson recently announced she wouldn't be returning to play Goddess Media. Given the numerous delays, it is entirely possible that The Contential will go into production before American Gods. There's no word yet on when Starz is planning to launch the series, but we do know that John Wick will be returning to cinemas May 17, 2019.
