Jodie Whittaker is The Thirteenth Doctor
As promised, the BBC announced who will be taking over from Peter Capaldi as The Doctor once he exits the role this Christmas. In a short teaser, a hooded figure was seen walking through a forest, then, a key materialises in their hand as we hear the sound of the TARDIS landing. The hood comes down to reveal Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor, and history was made.
In a brief statement, Whittaker had this to say about being the first ever female Doctor.
"I'm beyond excited to begin this epic journey - with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet. It's more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can't wait."
Naturally, some fans might feel fearful for the future of the show, but Whittaker eloquently puts any concerns to rest.
"It feels completely overwhelming, as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not be boxed in by what you're told you can't be.
Doctor Who represents everything that's exciting about change... the fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one."
New showrunner and head writer Chris Chibnall had a few words to say, and he revealed that his first Doctor was always going to be a woman.
"After months of lists, conversations, auditions, recalls, and a lot of secret-keeping, we're excited to welcome Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor. I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we're thrilled to have secured our number one choice. Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away. Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength, and warmth to the role. The Thirteenth Doctor is on her way."
Best known for her dramatic roles in Marchlands and Chris Chibnall's Broadchurch, Whittaker is a tremendous talent and a fantastic choice for the role of a lifetime. Peter Capaldi's Doctor was last seen refusing to regenerate and was greeted by a surprise visit from The First Doctor (played by David Bradley). It seems that his refusal to change is going to give The Doctor his most unexpected regeneration yet.
Whittaker will make her debut this Christmas during the closing moments of the as yet untitled festival special.
