Jessica Biel Teases That The Sinner Could Return
Although it was set up as a one-off limited series, the success of The Sinner (including two Golden Globe nominations) has led the possibility of a second season of the gripping thriller produced by and starring Jessica Biel.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Biel announced that a decision on a second season has yet to be made, but the appetite to expand the limited series into a returning drama is there.
"We are really hoping to hear soon if we get to come back or not. Initially, the show was genuinely conceived as a limited series so it was a surprise to us as well that, with the amazing viewership and the incredible journey that this show has taken, it was even a possibility to come back.
We're hoping to set it up and see if we can come up with some amazing and interesting stories. If we get to come back, we're starting fresh again."
Without spoiling too much for those that haven't seen it, The Sinner brought the story to a close with barely an unresolved thread left dangling. Sure, some of it didn't quite add up, but it was a satisfying mystery with knockout performances from Jessica Biel and Bill Pullman. I would happily watch Pullman's crumpled and downbeat Detective Harry Ambrose take on another case, perhaps the new investigation requires the assistance of Biel's Cora Tannetti. That said, The Sinner was a rivetting one-off, and it's difficult to see how a second season could work without feeling tacked on.Hopefully, that won't be the case as Biel delivered a career-best performance in a startling thriller that was only too easy to watch over a weekend.
It remains unclear if Beil will reprise her role, but she confirmed that she will remain involved as a producer regardless.
"I will definitely be involved in some way! I hope somebody writes me into the show, if we can figure it out. We will figure it out if it's possible, but we want to be authentic to the show. We want to do what's right for the show as opposed to what's right for me."
The Sinner is available to stream on Netflix.
