James Gunn Will Direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3
There are just a couple of weeks left to wait before we see the return of those lovable Guardians of the Galaxy in the eagerly awaited follow-up to the 2014 smash hit. Naturally, fans have been itching to find out if writer/director James Gunn will be back for Vol.3 as his distinct voice is a big part of what made the first movie fly.Â
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Gunn has announced that he will be return to close out the trilogy.
"So, yes, Iâm returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In the end, my love for Rocket, Groot, Gamora, Star-Lord, Yondu, Mantis, Drax, and Nebula â and some of the other forthcoming heroes â goes deeper than you guys can possibly imagine, and I feel they have more adventures to go on and things to learn about themselves and the wonderful and sometimes terrifying universe we all inhabit. And, like in both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, we will work on creating the story that goes beyond what you expect."
Gunn also revealed that he was unsure until recently if making a third Guardians was something he "needed to do".
"I needed to know it was, in my heart, what I truly felt called to do. There is a history in Hollywood of haphazard endings to trilogies, and I didnât want to become a part of that dishonorable tradition of pretending the third one doesnât exist. I couldnât do it for the money, and I couldnât do it because it was what other people wanted me to do. I needed to do it because it was what I needed to do. I have never made choices in my career based on anything other than passion and love for the stories and characters, and I didnât want to start now."
I've been a big fan of James Gunn since his surprisingly good script for the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake. Gunn followed this by writing and directing horror comedy Slither and made a fantastic indie superhero movie in 2010 with Super. I can't say I was a fan of the two live-action Scooby-Doo films that Gunn wrote, but a writer has to get a foot in the door somehow.
While there's currently no fixed release date for Vol.3, Gunn announced that the third Guardians adventure wouldn't happen until after the Avengers Infinity War story-arc has been completed.
"Much of whatâs happened in the MCU for the past ten or so years has been leading, in a big way, to the Avengersâ Infinity War. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will happen after all that. It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond. I will be working side-by-side with Kevin Feige and the gang to help design where these stories go, and make sure the future of the Marvel Cosmic Universe is as special and authentic and magical as what we have created so far."
Star-Lord, Rocket, Groot, Gamora, Yondu, Mantis, Drax, and Nebula will all be joining forces with the Earthbound Avengers in next summer's Infinity War. Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 arrives in UK cinemas on April 28 ahead of its US launch on May 5.Â
