James Cameron Talks Terminator Reboot
Following the underwhelming response to the frustratingly titled Terminator Genisys, you'd be forgiven for thinking the legendary franchise was played out. However, when James Cameron enlisted Deadpool's Tim Miller to direct a new Terminator movie, my interest was peaked.
Cameron returns to the world he created by developing the story and producing what has been described as a true sequel to T2. Linda Hamilton will return to her iconic role as Sarah Connor alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. Gabriel Luna (Ghost Rider from SHIELD) will be the latest model Terminator with Diego Boneta, Natalia Reyes, and Mackenzie Davis in as yet undisclosed roles.
Speaking to Deadline, Cameron explained how they're approaching the story of the new movie in a technology-obsessed world.
“We are looking at it differently than when I wrote the first story in 1982. That was just a classic sort of ‘technology bad, smart computers bad’ kind of thing. It’s got to be a much more nuanced perspective now I think, and hopefully, we’ll show that ‘smart computers bad but…’ is the new motif."
Wisely, Cameron will be ignoring the events of Rise of the Machines, Salvation, and the other one to forge a direct follow up to T2: Judgement Day. More than 25 years on from its release, T2 is still the benchmark for sequels. Forget Godfather Part II, Aliens, Winter Soldier, Before Sunset, and Sharknado 3 Oh Hell No!, T2 might just be the greatest sequel of all time. Apart from Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, obviously.
Shortly after Schwarzenegger's recent heart surgery, the release date for the as yet untitled film was pushed back by a couple of months from summer 2019 to November 22. Officially, Terminator shifted its release to avoid a clash with Dwayne Johnson's Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw. Much like the Alien franchise that peaked with the second movie (which Cameron directed), there's more bad in the Terminator bank than good. Be that as it may, this is being set up as a franchise closer so hopefully, Cameron and Miller can stick the landing.
