The first Fast & Furious spin-off is revving up to start production later this year and has finally found its villain. Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs and Jason Statham's Shaw will be up against Idris Elbawho will be causing all sorts of high stakes problems for our mismatched duo.

There are currently no details on Elba's character, but a safe bet would be he's a former special forces operative gone rogue, or something along those lines. Frequent Fast & Furious writer Chris Morgan has penned the script, so it's difficult to imagine that he'll deviate too far from the franchise template. Deadpool 2 director David Leitch will be calling the shots, and earlier this year he revealed that Hobbs & Shaw will be forging its own path.

“We really do want to set off on our own specific journey with these characters. If you look at the worlds that they come from in the franchise, they're not from the street racing world. The first movies in Fast, it was all about street racing, and then it became sort of a heist franchise, and then it became a spy franchise.

I think Jason's character is definitely from the spy world, and Dwayne's character is more of an agent, right? Working with the government. We're going to lean more into their worlds. But I think we still want the same sort of level of spectacle and fun that the Fast (movies) have.”

Ever since Dwayne Johnson joined the cast with Fast Five, Universal has been keen to set up a spin-off centered around his character. Nine years on from his first appearance as Agent Hobbs and Johnson has become the biggest (and most prolific) movie star on the planet. Even threadbare material like Rampage can generate more than $400 million worldwide, Baywatch was a rare blip, but as he churns out three movies a year, he bounced back with Jumanji before the end of 2017.

Universal has set release dates for the final two Fast & Furious sequels for April 2020, and April 2021 respectively. Hobbs & Shaw is set to kick-start a new franchise to continue once Fast & Furious comes to an end. 2021 will mark the 20th anniversary of the franchise, so what better way to celebrate than bringing the high-octane series to a close.

Hobbs & Shaw will arrive in cinemas worldwide on August 2, 2019.
