No longer shall the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them be referred to as Fantastic Beasts 2. Warner Bros has let it be known that from this day forth, the eagerly awaited follow-up has the official title of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Having made a brief cameo at the climax of the first film, Johnny Depp will be the primary antagonist as the villainous wizard Gellert Grindelwald. According to the newly released synopsis, we're teased what nefarious shenanigans Grindwald will be up to, and who will be standing in his way.

"Making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald's plans, Albus Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world."

Courtesy of Deadline, we also have our first look at Jude Law who is portraying the younger version of Hogwarts' future headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. The ties to the Harry Potter franchise don't end there; the new film will also feature an appearance from famed alchemist Nicolas Flamel who forged the Philosopher's Stone with none other than Albus Dumbledore. Producer David Heyman recently hinted that there would be plenty of easter eggs and links to the Harry Potter films, but a prior knowledge of the franchise isn't essential to enjoying the prequel saga.

"I think the pleasure of these Fantastic Beasts films is that they'll work on their own terms. You don't need to know Harry Potter to enjoy them, but if you do, you have another layer, another level to enjoy."

Written by J.K Rowling and directed by David Yates, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will conjure its way into cinemas worldwide on November 16, 2018.
