Doctor Who Season 11 Sets Launch Date and Reveals First Episode Title
The highly-anticipated return of Doctor Who has finally set a date for Jodie Whittaker's debut as the iconic Time Lord. In what some fans have dubbed "a drastic departure", when Doctor Who returns to our screens next month, it won't be in its traditional Saturday evening slot. There is no cause for alarm though as it will move to early Sunday evening, and new showrunner Chris Chibnallhas a perfectly valid reason for making the change.
"New Doctor, new home! Jodie Whittaker's Doctor is about to burst into Sunday nights — and make the end of the weekend so much more exciting. Get everybody's homework done, sort out your Monday clothes, then grab some special Sunday night popcorn, and settle down with all of the family for Sunday night adventures across space and time. (Also, move the sofa away from the wall so parents can hide behind it during the scary bits). The Thirteenth Doctor is falling from the sky, and it's going to be a blast."
Production on the new series concluded last month, and the title for the first episode has been revealed as "The Woman Who Fell To Earth". Written by Chris Chibnal, the special hour-long introduction to the Thirteenth Doctor will also introduce the trio of TARDIS companions played by Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole, and Mandip Gill.
I love the idea of Doctor Who being on in the winter, add to that the comfy jumper that is Sunday, and you have all the makings of perfect family viewing. The gender of The Doctor and a not that drastic shift in the schedule aren't the only changes that the new series will be bringing. Jodie Whittaker's debut run will be shortest since the series was revived back in 2005. Historically, new-Who comprises of thirteen episodes and a Christmas special, that was reduced to twelve and a festive edition for Capaldi's entire time in the TARDIS. However, Chibnall and Whittaker's debut will consist of just ten episodes. On the plus side, there definitely will be a Christmas special this year with filming set to start sometime next month.
Doctor Who returns to BBC One on Sunday, October 7 with The Woman Who Fell to Earth.
