According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is in the early stages of developing a Tron reboot and are eyeing Academy Award winner Jared Leto to lead the cast.

Arriving almost thirty years after the cult classic, Tron Legacy was very much designed to kick-start a new franchise with cutting-edge digital effects. There's no denying that Joseph Kosinski's movie looked stunning (aside from the creepy de-aged Jeff Bridges), but it struggled to break out as a genuine blockbuster.

Grossing just over $400 million worldwide, Tron Legacy had a hard time justifying its $170 million budget, but that didn't seem to prevent Disney from actively developing a third movie. In the years since its release, Kosinski has been vocal about his ideas for the sequel, and recently had this to say about Tron Ascension:

"What I'm excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we've usually seen. So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of Tron, or multiple worlds of Tron, and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of Tron in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen."

Kosinski describes Tron 3 as being in "cryogenic freeze" and cites Disney's abundance of sure fire blockbusters (Star Wars, Marvel) as one of the causes for the slow moving development. There are currently no filmmakers attached to the Tron reboot, and it remains unclear if Kosinski will be involved.

Ironically, shortly before Disney pulled the plug on Tron Ascension back in 2015, Jared Leto was reportedly in talks to take on a 'key role' in the movie.
