Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency won't be opening its doors for business with a third season as BBC America has cancelled the series.

“We are beyond proud of this brilliant original series and so appreciative of the outstanding team behind it including Max Landis, Samuel Barnett, Elijah Wood, and many many others. It was a privilege to work with this talented and passionate group of writers, producers and actors on these two seasons of Dirk. Thanks also to the passionate fans who embraced this fantastically novel world.”

Based on Douglas Adams' books of the same name, the second attempt to bring Dirk Gently to the small screen came to us from Fantastic Four and Chronicle writer Max Landis. Samuel Barnett (Penny Dreadful) stared as the titular holistic detective who firmly believes in the interconnectedness of all things. Aided by his new friend and unwitting assistant Todd (Elijah Wood), Dirk edges closer to uncovering the biggest conspiracy of his career, one side step at a time.

I loved the previous adaptation of Dirk Gently with Stephen Mangan and Darren Boyd, so naturally, I was defensive when I learned a US remake was on the way. The inclusion of Max Landis on the creative team didn't fill me with hope, but credit where credit is due, the new Dirk Gently wasn't totally awful. I'll go one step further; I'm mildly disappointed there won't be a third season, I was genuinely surprised with how watchable it was, and the additions of Alan Tudyk and John Hannah to the second season were fantastic.

Adapting Douglas Adams' work to TV or film is a near impossible task, even the first version of Dirk Gently was a largely name only adaptation, but it still felt quintessentially Adams. Almost six years on from its abrupt cancellation, I'm still sore that the BBC only gave us four episodes of Mangan's Dirk Gently, if I'm honest, I'm probably more upset about that than the new Dirk's cancellation.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency is available on Netflix.
