Sony is moving forward with its Men in Black reboot/spin-off, and are aiming high on the A-list with Chris Hemsworth in talks to lead the cast. According to Deadline, Hemsworth is 'circling the project' which will be directed by Fast and Furious 8 helmer F. Gary Gray. Iron Man writers Matt Holloway and Art Marcum have drafted the script, and Sony has set a June 14, 2019, release date.

A continuation of the MIB universe has been on the cards since the third movie grossed a franchise-best $624 million worldwide back in 2012. In the years since MIB 3, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have been open to another sequel, but despite a variety of scripts, no movie materialised. The franchise came very close to merging with 21 Jump Street for a crossover titled MIB 23, and for a while, it looked like it could happen. Sadly, we're unlikely to see Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum take on the scum on the universe, which genuinely makes me upset.

On the more positive side, Hemsworth leading the reboot is something that could work out nicely. The Thor star stretched his comedic muscles to great effect in Thor Ragnorak, and even if you hated it (and you probably did), nobody could accuse Hemsworth of not being game for a laugh with his mostly thankless role in Ghostbusters. The recent fake trailer for Dundee had Hemsworth on fine comedy form and made me want to see him in a buddy movie with Danny McBride. Hollywood, make it happen.

Hemsworth's Marvel contract is complete once his work on the as yet untitled Avengers 4 is done, so should he be finished playing the God of Thunder, Hemsworth could be lining up his next franchise. Avengers: Infinity War arrives in the UK on April 27.
