As we inch closer to my personal favorite holiday of the year, Halloween, our goodie bags are already overflowing with horror catalog releases and this is a darn fine week to start us off. Here are your DVD and Blu-ray releases for September 24, 2013.

It just seems appropriate to start off the Halloween slate of releases with the namesake classic. Halloween: The 35th Anniversary Edition is the all new edition of the slasher originator and although this film has been released many times before, this is the one to get. Finally given a new transfer supervised by the film’s original director of photography, Dean Cundey, this new transfer is miles better than any previous versions. Great muted color palette, amazing detail and a killer surround track guaranteed all your old versions can go out the window; this is the definitive version of Halloween.

Next up with the horror catalog are three films dear to my heart and all brought to us courtesy of the phantasmagorically awesome Shout Factory. Prince of Darkness may just be my favorite John Carpenter film, possibly even edging out Halloween. This is a dread filled, well-acted, brilliantly paced tale of good vs. evil full of great characters, amazing locations, top notch horror and scares, and Alice Cooper to top it all off. And the transfer for this films arrival on Blu-ray is staggeringly beautiful. My must buy of the week for sure.

Pair Prince of Darkness up with two underrated and brilliant sequels to the granddaddy of the slasher film, Psycho, with Psycho II and Psycho III. Psycho II tells the tale of the newly released Norman Bates as he tries so desperately to lead a normal life, but pesky Vera Miles just won’t let him. Psycho III has Norman continuing to run his business with so many people showing up just begging to be done in by Mother. Both films have wonderful new transfers and a great package of special features for all you Mother lovers out there. Two great horror sequels well deserving of a place in the collection.

I couldn’t help but round out the week with an all-night marathon of the new hit TV series Hannibal: Season One. Being a fan of all the films in the Hannibal Lecter series of films, I was excited to see a TV show based on the pre-incarceration years of the cannibal doctor, but I did not expect a show of such high quality writing, acting and style. Hugh Dancy is now the definitive Will Graham (still love you William Peterson) and Mads Mikkelsen takes the reins of the doctor very diligently, giving us a different take than Anthony Hopkins, but one that is equally chilling. A fantastic show that I am eager to see continue right up until we meet a certain Clarice Starling.

Until next week movie lovers.

Bill Howard

A film fan since he was a wee child and received a full sized Terminator movie poster as a gift, Bill lives for movies. An avid collector of Blu-ray and DVD (and VHS, Beta, and Laserdisc before that), Bill also has his own review site, Fountain and has recently completed his first horror novel, 10 Minutes from Home. Bill is often a crusader for the films that no one likes or no one has heard of(he loves Ishtar, Superman Returns, the Star Wars prequels and almost all of the horror remakes...) and just wants everyone to share their love for movies instead of spreading their hate for them.
