It’s Halloween week, so let’s start it off with one messed up new horror flick, Mandy. Nicolas Cage and Andrea Riseborough star as Red Miller and Mandy Bloom, a lumberjack and artist in love spending the weekend in Red’s secluded cabin in the woods. But when Mandy catches the eye of a crazed cult leader, a group of demonic motorcycle-riding marauders is conjured to help the cult kidnap Mandy, which sends Red into a psychedelic drug fuelled rage that drives him to stop at nothing to get his love back.

Mandy is very…different. Cage gives a gleefully unhinged performance and director Panos Cosmatos creates a dizzying, color laden, trippy visual palette unlike anything in recent memory. Mandy does have a deliberately slow pace and many bizarre and questionable plot deviations, but for those craving something different, violent and absolutely unique, Mandy just might be the perfect Halloween movie night choice.

Next up are a couple of must own catalog re-releases starting with a newly remastered Blu-ray (and 4K Blu-ray) release of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. The story of this sci fi classic is well known but to recap: A large black monolith is discovered beneath the surface of the moon and the consensus is that it was intentionally buried by intelligent life. When it seems the monolith originates from Jupiter, an expedition is sent in hopes of finding whomever built it. But what Dr. David Bowman (Keir Dullea) discovers on his journey is much more than he could have bargained for and may hold all the answers the universe holds.

2001: A Space Odyssey is an undeniable classic and stills holds up today. The amazing thing is that this film was made before other sci fi classics like Star Wars and yet its effects hold up better than any sci fi film I can think of. Kubrick created such a beautiful work of art here and it has somehow not aged a bit outside of its decidedly 60’s sense of furniture style. But the dialogue, visual style, special effects and story remain as timeless as they ever were. And this newly remastered edition is a sight to behold. If you haven’t gotten around to owning this piece of film history, now is the time.

Lastly this week is another modern classic, Rob Reiner’s The Princess Bride, in a new Criterion Collection special edition. When a young boy (Fred Savage) is home sick from school, his grandfather (Peter Falk) arrives to read him a story that he is not at all interested in hearing. But the wondrous tale of Wesley (Cary Elwes), and his friends Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) and Fezzick (Andre the Giant) as they go on a quest to rescue Wesley’s great love Buttercup (Robin Wright) before she is forced to marry the horrendous Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon) wins him over as he discovers the greatest adventure ever.

The Princess Bride is an absolute joy of a movie and a bonafide classic. This brilliant movie is full of pure heart and goodness and is not only hilarious and full of spectacular adventure, but it features unbelievably perfect performances by absolutely everyone in the cast. This is one of those movies that was just a perfect storm of people behind and in front of the camera and the result is a movie that hasn’t aged one bit since 1987. This new Criterion Collection edition of The Princess Bride features a wonderful new 4K restoration of the film and a huge collection of supplemental material making this the definitive Blu-ray edition of this fantastic film.

Also of note this week is the new animated movie Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, the new Korean action film Believer with Jin-Woong Cho and Seung-won Cha, and the new horror film Slender Man.

Until next week movie lovers.

A film fan since he was a wee child and received a full sized Terminator movie poster as a gift, Bill lives for movies. An avid collector of Blu-ray and DVD (and VHS, Beta, and Laserdisc before that), Bill also has his own review site, Fountain Pop.com and has recently completed his first horror novel, 10 Minutes from Home. Bill is often a crusader for the films that no one likes or no one has heard of(he loves Ishtar, Superman Returns, the Star Wars prequels and almost all of the horror remakes...) and just wants everyone to share their love for movies instead of spreading their hate for them.
