October kicks off with the fourth installment of the hit Purge franchise, The First Purge. In this prequel to the Purge series, The New Founding Fathers, NFFA, have decided that America’s uncontrolled violence can be healed with a national day when all crime is legal for 12 hours, dubbed The Purge. To test their new plan, the Purge is set to take place on Staten Island and no one is required to stay while it is happening. But as an incentive, residents can stay for a $5000 paycheck. Chief of Staff Arlo Sabian (Patch Darragh) and Dr. May Updale (Marisa Tomei) spearhead the project but nobody could expect the results that lay ahead.

I have loved the Purge films (and TV series) thus far, it is a brilliant combination of horror thrills, social and political commentary, and some crazy tension. This installment shifts the gears and keeps things fresh as we journey back to the roots of The Purge before it became a national holiday. The whole cast are great and the stories are compelling and lead perfectly into the already established Purge universe. Very curious where this franchise will go from here, but I am on board for whatever is in store.

Next up this week is a new HBO show, Barry: The Complete First Season. SNL’s Bill Hader stars as Barry, an affable hitman from the Midwest who relocated to Los Angeles for a job and decides to stay once he stumbles on an acting class and becomes enamoured one of the students. Barry tried to balance his work and near non-existent personal life while trying to figure out a way to leave his days of killing behind and settle into a normal life.

Barry is a brilliant blend of dry comedy, sweet romance, and great action. It never takes any element of itself lightly with fantastic writing, a stellar cast supporting Hader that includes the wonderful Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, and a newly Emmy winning performance by Henry Winkler. Barry is endearing but still has an adult thriller at its heart when dealing with Barry’s lethal profession. Barry: The Complete First Season is worth checking out.

Lastly this month is a new indie post-apocalyptic thriller called Molly. Julia Batelaan plays the title character of Molly, a lone wanderer in a desperate post-apocalyptic world where bullets have become currency and medicine is rare. Molly soon finds herself in the crosshairs of a group of marauders who are searching for a mythical girl with superpowers they believe is Molly. Now Molly must protect a young girl she found in the wasteland and stop the marauders from their campaign of turning innocent people into rabid beasts to fight each other for entertainment.

Molly is a very ambitious action flick that impresses with its solid performances, especially by Batelaan, and its unique settings and action choreography. Filmed in The Netherlands, Molly has some very interesting sets and locations that really stand out and set Molly apart from other films in the genre. And the final act is a brilliantly executed single continuous shot that has to be seen to be fully appreciated. Molly is proof you don’t have to have a huge budget if you just have some cool ideas and a lot of creativity.

Also of note this week is a new horror flick, Feral, with Scout Taylor-Compton, and two eagerly anticipated horror classics on Blu-ray for the first time, Darren McGavin in The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler.

Until next week movie lovers.

A film fan since he was a wee child and received a full sized Terminator movie poster as a gift, Bill lives for movies. An avid collector of Blu-ray and DVD (and VHS, Beta, and Laserdisc before that), Bill also has his own review site, Fountain Pop.com and has recently completed his first horror novel, 10 Minutes from Home. Bill is often a crusader for the films that no one likes or no one has heard of(he loves Ishtar, Superman Returns, the Star Wars prequels and almost all of the horror remakes...) and just wants everyone to share their love for movies instead of spreading their hate for them.
