Welcome to December! Usually December brings a lot of great big screen releases but strangely this year December seems to be looking a little thin. Some great smaller titles and TV to be found though. These are your new releases for December 1, 2015.

First up this week is the spin off from the record breaking series The Walking Dead that brings us face to face with the beginning of the zombie apocalypse. Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete First Season follows the Clark family in Los Angeles when a mysterious illness takes hold of the city and turns people into walking corpses. Kim (Madison Clark), her boyfriend Travis (Cliff Curtis) and their kids find themselves in the middle of a deadly situation when the dead come back to life and try to feed on the living. When Los Angeles falls under the control of the military the family must unite with friends and strangers to survive the apocalypse.

Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete First Season is a different animal than the uber-popular parent show The Walking Dead. This one is much more family-centric and deals with all the problems facing people who have no idea what is going on around them. The zombies are much fresher for starters but the sense of chaos is also amped up more in this world. Smart writing, great characters and a great build up to a fantastic finale makes this one worth checking out for zombie fans.

Next up is the latest instalment in the Transporter franchise, The Transporter Refuelled. The first film in the series without star Jason Statham, this one stars Ed Skerein in the role made famous by Statham, consummate professional driver Frank Martin. Martin, now leading a relatively safe life, gets conned into helping a group of femme fatales into helping with a daring bank robbery.

While the absence of Statham is definitely felt and sorely missed, Skerein does pretty good filling those boots. He brings a new swagger and attitude to the role that is a little warmer and a little more flirtatious than Statham. But he can definitely keep up in the fighting department and in the car chases, those scenes manage to keep the spirit of the franchise alive. There is more of a focus on the beautiful women in this one but the action is still fast paced with spectacular set pieces that make it well worth checking out.

Lastly this week is another new action flick, Momentum starring Olga Kurylenko as Alex Farraday, a mysterious thief who accidentally takes a valuable hard drive during a bank heist and finds herself pursued by a ruthless assassin who is trying to get it back for his hi ranking political boss. Now Alex must continue to evade the assassin and his hit squad while trying to uncover the truth behind the contents of the hard drive.

Momentum is a direct to video title but don’t let that stop you from checking it out. Olga Kurylenko is always great whether she is in a big budget flick like Oblivion opposite Tom Cruise or in smaller films like this one. She is a great action contender against other popular action stars like Milla Jovovich. In Momentum she is pitted against James Purefoy as a deadly assassin who will stop at nothing to get what he needs. The action scenes are very well staged and lot of fun to watch. And Kurylenko and Purefoy are both great in their roles elevating Momentum above other direct to video actioners as of late. Momentum is a sure fire winner for action fans.

Also of note this week is the acclaimed documentary Amy chronicling the life of late singer Amy Winehouse, the horror comedy Cooties starring Elijah Wood and Rainn Wilson, and the cult indie horror hit Goodnight Mommy.

Until next week movie lovers.

Bill Howard

A film fan since he was a wee child and received a full sized Terminator movie poster as a gift, Bill lives for movies. An avid collector of Blu-ray and DVD (and VHS, Beta, and Laserdisc before that), Bill also has his own review site, Fountain Pop.com and has recently completed his first horror novel, 10 Minutes from Home. Bill is often a crusader for the films that no one likes or no one has heard of(he loves Ishtar, Superman Returns, the Star Wars prequels and almost all of the horror remakes...) and just wants everyone to share their love for movies instead of spreading their hate for them.
