We might have to wait another decade before The Simpsons return for a sequel, but 20th Century Fox is bringing another dysfunctional animated family to the big screen with a movie version of Bob's Burgers.

The happy news was revealed by series creator Loren Bouchard, and he's promised to craft a film that longtime fans and newcomers can enjoy.

"We know the movie has to scratch every itch the fans of the show have ever had, but it also has to work for all the good people who've never seen the show.

We also know it has to fill every inch of the screen with the colours and the sounds and the ever-so-slightly greasy texture of the world of Bob's,but most of all it has to take our characters on an epic adventure. In other words, it has to be the best movie ever made. But no pressure, right?"

Twentieth Century Fox Film chairman and CEO Stacey Snider added;

"A Bob's Burgers film fits perfectly with our initiative to redouble our family and animation efforts. We're grateful to [Fox Television Group chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden] for trusting us with this beloved property and we're so excited to be working with Loren and his team."

Bob's Burgers arrived back in 2011, and in case you've never seen an episode, the show charts the ups and downs of the Belchers who live above their family-run burger restaurant. That might not sound like an award-winning series that just started its eighth season, but the hilarious and often bittersweet lives of the Belchers offers a more grounded depiction of family life than the likes of The Simpsons, American Dad and Family Guy. If you liked King of the Hill, then you'll love Bob's Burgers, if of course, you're already not a massive fan.

The Bob's Burgers Movie will be served up in cinemas on July 17, 2020.
