According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gary Dauberman will make his directorial debut with the third instalment of the Annabelle franchise. The possessed porcelain doll's return is on the fast track, and she'll be back to terrify another unassuming family on July 3, 2019.

Gary Dauberman is well versed in the genre having written both Annabelle movies, co-written horror blockbuster It plus the forthcoming sequel, and he also wrote the other Conjuring spin-off The Nun directed by Corin Hardy that hits cinemas later this year. Across the four existing movies, The Conjuring and its spin-offs have amassed more than $1.2 billion worldwide officially making it the highest grossing horror franchise of all time.

Last year's Annabelle Creation managed a rare feat for a horror movie sequel/prequel (or any sequel), it was better than its predecessor and made more money at the box office. Creation generated more than $306 million worldwide compared to the still highly respectable $257 million the first one grossed in 2014.

For me, the first Annabelle lacked the classy approach to horror that made The Conjuring (and its sequel) special, yet it still managed a few good jumps. Naturally, expectations were low for Creation, so imagine everybody's surprise when it delivered a solid horror flick and audiences worldwide agreed. By no means on par with James Wan's two Conjuring films, but Lights Out director David F. Sandberg did an admirable job trying to mimic Wan's style.

Meanwhile, The Conjuring universe continues to expand with another spin-off The Crooked Man in development and a third Conjuring that will undoubtedly spawn even more spin-offs. It remains unclear if James Wan will be back to direct The Conjuring 3, he's currently finishing post-production on Aquaman, and he's in line to direct an adaptation of Stephen King's The Tommyknockers. There are no details on a potential release date, and I would imagine that Warner Brod would be only too happy to wait.

Starring Taissa Farmiga, Demián Bichir, Charlotte Hope, The Nun is released in UK cinemas on September 7.
