Three years after HBO abandoned their plans for a remake of cult Channel 4 series Utopia, Amazon has revived the project with Gone Girl writer Gillian Flynn returning to develop the project. Given a straight to series order of nine episodes, Utopia is one of several new offerings that has been given the go-ahead since Jennifer Salke was appointed to Head of Amazon Studios.

Created by Dennis Kelly, Utopia ran for just two seasons of six episodes on Channel for from 2013-2014, but despite the strong critical praise and a loyal following, Channel 4 opted not to renew the show for a third series. Utopia centers on a band of people who are thrown together when they discover a manuscript for a book that has accurately predicted all of the major disasters of the last hundred years. The merry gang of misfits isn't the only ones who know about the book as a shadowy organization (The Network) who will stop at nothing to silence them. While it certainly generated its fair share of controversy during its short run, Utopia was a deeply intelligent and lovingly crafted series that deserves to be revisited.

Shortly after its cancellation, HBO announced that David Fincher was onboard to develop a US version starring Rooney Mara that was scheduled for broadcast sometime in 2016. Having just directed Gone Girl, Fincher brought in Flynn to write the series, However, after months of talks, HBO and Fincher couldn't reach terms on the budget which led to the acclaimed filmmaker departing the series. Instead of hiring a new creative force for the remake, HBO decided to drop the project entirely, and Utopia was canceled for the second time.

We'll be seeing another Gillian Flynn adaptation on our screens later this year with the HBO Limited Series Sharp Objects. Developed by Buffy's Marti Noxon, the murder mystery miniseries stars Amy Adams, Patrica Clarkson, Madison Davenport, and Elizabeth Perkins. There's no fixed release date yet, but Sharp Objects is expected to be broadcast at some point over the summer. More on the Uptopia US remake as it comes in.
