Warner Bros have ended a month's worth of speculation over who will be under the cowl in the forthcoming Superman/Batman team up movie. Ben Affleck has been cast in the Man Of Steel sequel as billionaire superhero Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego Batman. Warner Bros president Greg Silverman had this to say about the casting decision;
“We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some,”
Rumours surfaced a few weeks ago that Christian Bale had been offered a $50 million payday to reprise the role but the Dark Knight Rises star was quick to deny any such deal had been proposed. Zack Snyder will return to direct which will see Henry Cavill’s Superman clash with the Caped Crusader. Adding his comments to the statement Snyder is equally thrilled with the choice;
“Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”
Ben Affleck was previously approached by Warner Bros to potentially direct their Justice League Movie a couple of years ago, although that deal didn’t come to pass his casting as Batman all but assures his inclusion in the film should it get off the ground. David S. Goyer is once again writing the script but Christopher Nolan will have a less active role in the sequel as he’s busy filming top secret sci-fi project Interstellar.
This will be the second superhero role for Ben Affleck having played the title role in box office bomb Daredevil. Currently working under the title of Batman vs Superman, filming is slated for sometime next year to meet that summer 2015 release date.
